Fotograf 51, also known as Photo 51, was an X-ray diffraction image of DNA taken by British scientist Rosalind Franklin in 1952. The image became the key to unlocking the structure of DNA, which was later deciphered by Francis Crick and James Watson along with Maurice Wilkins. The image showed the X-shaped pattern of DNA indicating the helical structure of the molecule, which confirmed the theory of Watson and Crick. Despite her important contribution to the discovery of DNA, Franklin's role was largely unrecognized during her lifetime.
